Leading by example with our driving speeds

CLOSED Parish Council Chairman's Blog

Author: John Downe

Published: Wednesday, 14th March 2012

In the aftermath of two recent serious accidents on Top Road / The Hollow the Highways and Transport Committee of the Parish Council are keen to encourage all residents to demonstrate to other road users that around here we drive sensibly and at appropriate speeds to suit the roads and conditions. If we all do this and encourage our visitors to do the same it will inevitably slow the average pace at which vehicles pass through. This equally applies to our lanes as well as our main through route and, given the possibility of icy conditions, the effect of the low sun on visibility and deer hazards, must make sense. As well as creating a safer area don't forget that with our narrow or non-existent pavements, speeding vehicles can also be very frightening for pedestrians.

The Committee would be interested to hear about your experiences of this approach and any other ideas for 'nudging' driver behaviour in the right direction by adding your comments to this Speak Out topic.

NB West Hoathly Parish Council's decisions and other minutes of the Parish Council which are recorded in the Clerk's minutes of the statutory meetings of the Council are the complete and formal record. This article is intended to give an informal narrative for residents of what has been happening in your Parish Council.
