Wanted: Cooker for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
To help Beavers, Cubs and Scouts with their cooking skills and Cookery Badges we would really like to have some cooking facilities in the Scout Hut. If anyone is buying a new cooker, would they consider donating their existing one to Scouts?
This would also enable us to run some fundraising events in the Scout Hut where we can provide hot food as well as cakes and puddings.

WSCC Broadband Campaign
West Sussex County Council have just launched a survey aimed at helping them prioritise the investments in broadband improvements across the county. It is a very simple and quick survey - just follow the link.
Responses to the Broadband Speak Out have been very helpful in raising the profile of this area but now it is important to respond to the WSCC survey to make sure our local telephone exchanges are upgraded as soon as possible. There is real money out there for the upgrades so let's try to make sure it comes our way!
If you know someone who needs to complete a printed form perhaps you could print one for them.
The Broadband Speak Out Topic is now closed for new comments but if you have any questions re the local Broadband service please use the Hub Club Speak Out Q & A Forum.

A 20-year Plan for our Neighbourhood - get involved!
Thanks to the Localism Act of 2011, we can now have a statutory role in the decisions on planning and development affecting our area.
Your Parish Council is seeking volunteers to help produce the necessary Neighbourhood Plan as we believe that it would be highly beneficial to our community and its future.
Anyone with an interest in how we maintain a vibrant community in the Parish and some time to participate would be very welcome, and if you have relevant knowledge of development or planning, landscape management or other associated topics your contribution could be particularly useful.
Our Neighbourhood Plan will need to cover the local infrastructure, employment, community facilities, landscape and housing so as to create a vision and "road map" for a community which can sustain itself through at least the next 20 years.
If you would like to find out more, do come along to our open information session on Feb 8th, or you can contact John Downe (01444-892065).

Steaming into East Grinstead
As part of our 50th Anniversary Appeal we are going to finish clearing Imberhorne Cutting and connect our pioneer steam heritage railway with the national network via our own platform at East Grinstead station.
But we need your help to get the diggers digging again!
Visit our website or click here to watch a video produced by the Bluebell Railway explaining what is happening with the extension into East Grinstead and what is required to make it happen.
Currently we are removing waste at a cost of around £25 per tonne. However from April 2012 our tax exemption will expire meaning that this cost will increase to around £94!
Click here for various ways that you can donate, be it via the Justgiving web page, Tenner for the tip Certificates or putting your spare change into collection boxes at the railway, it all helps us to reach our goal of steaming into East Grinstead.

Burgundy Dinner - The Domaine Parent
on: Fri 3rd Feb 2012 at 7:30pm
at: Gravetye Manor
The Domaine Parent was founded in 1803 and is currently run by two sisters, Anne Parent & Catherine Fages-Parent, who represent the 12th generation and perpetuate a family tradition dating back to the 17th century. The philosophy is to produce authentic wines with great delicacy, elegant, distinguished, sensual, and beautiful aromatic expression. The Estate offers mostly Premier Crus in particular the famous Pommard appellation. We are delighted to welcome Anne Parent to Gravetye. In 2010 Anne was awarded the ‘Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur’ to thank her for her continual personal involvement in the viniculture of Burgundy and especially for her involvement for and with women winemakers.
£110.00 per head, four courses and wines inclusive.

A 20-year Plan for our Neighbourhood - Open Information Session
on: Wed 8th Feb 2012 at 8:00pm
at: West Hoathly Primary School
Come and hear how you can help shape the future of our neighbourhood. Your Parish Council is seeking volunteers to help produce the the Neighbourhood Plan as we believe that it would be highly beneficial to our community and its future.
All are welcome to attend this open meeting where Claire Tester, Head of Economic Promotion & Planning at Mid Sussex District Council, will explain more and there will be an opportunity to discuss the project with members of the Parish Council.
Our Neighbourhood Plan will need to cover the local infrastructure, employment, community facilities, landscape and housing so as to create a vision and "road map" for a community which can sustain itself through at least the next 20 years. It needs to be a thorough, community-led project. Once produced, and in order to be formally adopted, the Plan will have to gain majority support in a Parish referendum.

Murder Mystery evening on the Golden Arrow Pullman.
on: Fri 17th Feb 2012 8:00pm - 11:00pm
at: Bluebell Railway
Presented by The Company Upfront.
Witness the murder, then board the Golden Arrow and steam through the Sussex countryside in the Pullman Carriages whilst enjoying a three course meal and solving the heinous crime.
Step back in time to 1956. The St Jude’s fête is about to begin. Mrs Robinson’s jam has pre-sold like hotcakes and the hotcakes didn’t turn up! There is already a queue for the 'Bat the Rat' and Mrs Davenport has sworn to kill her husband if she catches him tinkering with Jennifer Clayton's coconuts again.
In anticipation of a wonderful afternoon an innocent carnival atmosphere abounds. However a sinister plot is unfolding.
Roger Smallpiece the new vicar is about to open the fête, the blood curdling cry of 'Murder' is heard…. but who is the victim & who is the murderer? But perhaps more importantly, who has won the picnic hamper in the raffle??

Alsace Wine Luncheon - Domaines Schlumberger
on: Tue 13th Mar 2012 at 12:30pm
at: Gravetye Manor
“I have only one daughter, but she talks enough for ten,” said Eric Schlumberger fondly of his discoursing and indefatigable daughter, Severine, who now runs Domaines Schlumberger. It is our pleasure and delight to welcome Severine Schlumberger back to Gravetye for a delicious lunch and a showing of her wines during the course of the meal. The vineyards of Domaines Schlumberger were originally planted by the Romans and were later controlled by an order of monks in the southern Alsace town of Guebwiller. Together, the 334 continuous acres make up the largest vineyard block in Alsace. With Grand Crus making up 50% of its vineyards, Schlumberger also owns the largest acreage of Grand Cru vineyards in all of Alsace. These impressive holdings are the result of devoted efforts of seven successive generations of the Schlumberger family.

on: Sat 24th Mar 2012 at 12:30pm

Summer 2010 saw the appointment of Tom Coward as Head Gardener at Gravetye. Having worked for 3 years alongside Fergus Garrett at Great Dixter, his experience has proved second to none in tackling this project. His focus from the start was on conserving and re-creating Robinson’s work but also progressing the garden in homage to his experimental style of gardening. Nearly two years into the work, and now a regular columnist in Country Life, Tom is fast gaining a reputation for his incredible plant knowledge as well as his vision and passion for the Gravetye gardens. Find out more about his brilliant work so far (including the glass house restoration and kitchen garden re-model) as well as a sneaky peak at what’s to come.

at: Gravetye Manor
James Hocking is the Director of The Vineyard Cellars and is considered by many to be the industry voice for premium Californian wine in the UK. He is regularly asked to contribute features on Californian wine by some of the world’s top opinion formers regarding wine including Jancis Robinson. For the first time at Gravetye, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome James to host a dinner showcasing some of the finest wines from California. Following a wine renaissance in the mid-20th century, Californian wine entered the international stage at the 1976 Judgement of Paris wine competition when California beat-out French wines in both red and white categories.
£110.00 Per head, four courses and wines inclusive.

Is your "Broadband" more like dangling from a narrow thread?
Miscellaneous Article
Internet connections are currently going through a major speed upgrade in the UK with many areas getting over 30 times faster Internet access than many of us receive today in our parish.
Potentially this puts rural areas at a disadvantage educationally for students, commercially for business users and in general access to the "information superhighway" for households. Your help is needed here to make a case for improvement! more...69 comments and 13 replies, latest about 2 weeks ago

Bluebell Railway
The volunteer-run Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1960. Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.
Any financial surplus made from running the trains is ploughed straight back into preservation work.
